Imbolc: Imbolc, also known as Brigid’s Day, is a Celtic tradition taking place on February 1st. This cross quarter day marks the halfway point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox, calling in rebirth, renewal, purification, and celebration of the coming season. This Sabbat signals the return of the sun and of longer days ahead. Brigid was the Celtic goddess of inspiration, craft, healing, midwifery, fertility, and poetry. She is often associated with fire burning within the hearth and home, as well as in the belly of the mother. Fire in this case marks more than just warmth, but of fertility and illumination as well. Moving through the hibernation of winter, we finally can see the first signs of spring, reminding us it is time to shed our skin and move forward on our path toward new beginnings. Traditionally during Imbolc, Brigid was welcomed into the home by crafting dollies from corn husks and leaving out a bowl of milk, flowers, and a burning light. She was evoked to protect the homes and livestock of families. Bonfires and feasts were often held in tribute and appreciation of Brigid. While Imbolc can be a beautiful celebration with loved ones, it also brings a sense of solitude, so quiet walks and soaking in the new stirrings of nature are wonderful ways to celebrate. Other ways you may want to celebrate are: planning a garden, creating an Imbolc altar, lighting a fire or candles, spring cleaning and cleansing rituals, and of course by setting intentions and looking deeper into your goals and intentions for the blossoming of the coming season.
